This is a vintage medical device. I believe that it is called a “Sigmoidoscope” and would have been used by a colorectal surgeon or proctology doctor.

The instrument, and the felt lined case, are both marked: “MADE BY BOEHM…ROCHESTER N.Y.” I’m not sure what was originally included, but I believe that THE KIT IS NOT COMPLETE. Please look at the photos to see what is being offered – if you don’t see it pictured above – I don’t have it.

What I DO have are the 3 different length colon probes. The shortest one measures 3 & 1/2 inches to 4 inches – not counting the ring. The “middle” one is 5 to 5 & 1/2 inches long, and the largest measures 11 to 11 & 1/2 inches long. The probes (or whatever they are) are made of stainless steel. Each one has a bullet shaped “head” which inserts into, and protrudes from, the end of the tube or cylinder.

The bullet “head” is attached to a thin rod, which is then connected to a heavy ring. There is also a hand held viewer of some kind, another round steel attachment with 3 prongs and a length of wire, which obviously plugs into something. Everything appears to be in EXCELLENT condition, with very little wear.

There is a stain on the box top, made from the residue of a piece of tape. I’m not sure WHEN this set was made, but I would “GUESS” around the 1940’s – give or take.

A great addition to any collection of vintage medical tools & instruments or an interesting conversation piece.
