This is an absolutely late 19th century gorgeous coffin Crucifix!
Very old old and heavy – weighing about 3.5 pounds. It was made in the USA by S.M.C. Co. and has the number 47 on it.
These were nailed or screwed to the top of a coffin around the turn of the century for a Catholic / Christian decoration.
They were used back when you were placed in a pine box and most of the ones made are in cemeteries or burial sites under the ground. Definitely not very common.
This is a nice piece of salvage ready to be re purposed or just hung on the wall for decoration.
