This is an INCREDIBLY RARE find! How about antique surgical amputation saw. This particular specimen is French and dates to 1700-1750.
Very nice patina and would still slice through a limb easily.
This rare saw was used by surgeons for amputation of limbs and has an original fine-tooth reversible blade under tension in a frame with a long wood handle. The stylized frame is made from iron and the screw has a beautiful semi-clover shape.
Saws from the pre-sterilization era are distinctive in that the handles were non-metallic and many had a pistol grip shape. Prior to the invention of antiseptics, amputation was often the treatment of first rather than last resort, to prevent infection spreading through the body from injuries and wounds.
When these come on the market they are VERY expensive. I actually have an even older one (late 1600’s), so, I’m selling this one for a rock bottom price.
This would make an awesome addition to your medical, antique, or oddities collection.
